Taxi fares are fixed by the government (but generally you are charged a flat fee for routine trips, and these rates can vary slightly) at $3 for the first ¼ mi and 40¢ for each additional ¼ mi, regardless of whether the taxi is a regular-size cab, van, or stretch limo. Additional passengers over two are $3 each. It is customary to tip taxi drivers 15%. You also can hire a car or small van for about $50 per hour.
Taxis are generally the best and most convenient way to get around New Providence. Fares are determined by zone. The fare is $6 for trips within downtown Nassau and on Paradise Island (which includes the bridge toll), $9 from Paradise Island to downtown, and $18 from Cable Beach to Paradise Island (including toll). Fares are for two passengers; each additional passenger is $3, regardless of the destination.
You can call a taxi or flag one down on the street. Taxi stands are also conveniently placed at most large hotels. Although metered rates vary by island, they are reasonable and are fixed by law. Below are the rates for Nassau.
